Everyone values clothing that is easy to mix, match, layer—clothing built to last and that doesn’t break the bank. With the cost of life steadily rising, it’s nice to find a brand that offers well-made fashion essentials that aren’t out of reach for the average shopper.
Meet Brixton, a company that sells apparel for the average person. I wanted to test a few items from the brand to see what makes these garments stand out and find pieces to become staples in my wardrobe. The items included: the Mod Flex Polo ($45), the Motor Jacket ($109), the Choice Chino Short ($33), the Madrid II Corduroy Short ($65), and the Grade Trucker Hat ($30).
What is Brixton?
While some companies forge ahead centering unique expression, Brixton is interested in keeping things classic and drawing inspiration from the past. Founded by three friends in Oceanside, CA, the brand began with the release of a vintage newsboy cap. The minds behind Brixton aim to create designs that meld a variety of styles and viewpoints in styles for both men and women. Brixton takes workwear essentials and elevates them with personality and style.

The materials are high quality
As a person who digs comfort and scouts durable clothing, the Mod Flex Polo and the Motor Jacket were the true stars of the items I tested.
The cotton-polyester blend of the Mod Flex Polo felt superior to other shirts at a similar price point. This polo is made of an especially comfortable fabric—I found myself stroking the shoulders of the shirt whenever I wore it just because I enjoyed the feel of the textile. Thanks to its comfort and versatile design that goes with almost anything, there were times when I didn’t even want to take the polo shirt off.
Not to be outdone, the Motor Jacket quickly became a staple of my early-fall wardrobe. The dill and blue plaid colorplay felt mature, but also playful and spirited. You can style this piece with a good pair of boots, denim, and an undershirt for a classic fall look.
The packaging is thoughtful
Brixton, unlike other brands that ship in cheap bags, cares about informing consumers through clever packaging. On opening the box, I immediately noticed the cardboard platform that reads “Wear it with a tilt!” separating the Grade Trucker Hat from the remainder of the clothing. QR codes printed on the cardboard take you to a page on the Brixton site displaying the location of its physical stores and tips on how to style their wide-brim and other fashionable caps.

There is a lack of options
As someone whose style ranges from Urban Chic to Athletic to Semi-formal to slightly adventurous, I had trouble finding items from Brixton that appealed to my taste.
It was a challenge finding bold colors, memorable designs, or clothing with character like the brand story suggests. Whenever I shop online, I like to think of which occasions and events I would wear an item, and with Brixton, I had little luck.
The shorts are not shortin’.
For guys who stand over six feet tall, the Choice Chino Short and Corduroy Short will probably have you showing more leg than you want. The eight-inch inseams make for an awkward fit. They are two inches too short for a tall person seeking comfort, and for us giants who love short shorts, they don’t hug the thighs enough for a summer fashionable look.
The Madrid II Corduroy Short sports a nice texture, though. It would be great for a summer cookout or even a casual party. The only issue is the whipstitch hem at the bottom of the shorts which gives them a more rugged rather than clean look.
The branding can be obnoxious
Personally, I tend to avoid wearing bold logos. Perhaps, that’s why I favored the Mod Flex Polo which has the small Brixton symbol. Though Brixton’s large and bold labels on their Grade Trucker Hat and other merchandise is not exclusive to the brand, I wish the caps and some of the tees would be more subtle and less forward in displaying the brand.
Is Brixton worth it?

Sure, but if you do, shop for individual staple items.
Brixton has a specific look for a specific shopper.
For those who love simple, durable clothing, Brixton is the place. For those who are seeking versatile outerwear or shirts, Brixton has some of that too.
It’s not the place, though, for those who love a pop of color, a splash of youth, or personality-defining pieces that become your own.
