Don’t pack away your winter wardrobe just yet!

As the season nears its end, there are plenty of ways to transition your clothes into the spring season without overheating.

Sydney-based stylist Joesphine Eve told 9Honey wearing the right fabrics is key when it comes to maximising your winter wardrobe in spring.

“When the weather changes, you get days where it’s super hot and then other days it’s a little bit cooler, then you need layers to keep warm,” she said.

“Have a selection of really good lightweight layers and breathable fabrics.

“Cotton or linen blend knitwear is really good. It’s so breathable that you can wear it in winter, spring and summer.

“You can always obviously whack another layer underneath in winter if it’s super duper cold.”

Other breathable layers include things like wool, silk and bamboo.

In the warmer months of spring, the same materials can be worn underneath a blazer or coat without making you sweat.

“If it starts to heat up, you can whack the trench off or the blazer off, or you can roll up the sleeves of the shirt,” she said.

“That way, you’ve got that breathability, one of the key elements of making sure you’re not sweating and overheating.”

Materials to avoid include man-made fabrics like polyester, acrylic and nylon.

“Those sweaty man-made fabrics trap in the heat,” Eve said.

The stylist of 11 years says you can save money by using the same winter items you already have, but styling them differently according to the season, focusing on colours.

“Everyone kind of associates winter with darker and heavier colours … if you want to freshen up your looks and make them a little bit more spring without actually breaking the bank, swap to different colours,” she says.

“You can use lighter coloured accessories … go for white sneakers [instead of black].

“[Use] beige accessories or lighter colours in your outfits in spring.

“Instead of doing a tall black boot, wear an ankle boot in a light colour, a loafer or a sneaker instead.

“Instead of a wool scarf, wear a scarf made from a lightweight fabric, like cotton or silk. They’re just easy little swaps that you can do!”

Some clothing items that work in every season include things like white button-down shirts, a good pair of jeans, a trench coat and a pair of boots.

Eve says creating a capsule wardrobe with good basics is critical when it comes to transitional wardrobes.

”I’m all about capsule wardrobes and making it easy to find outfits every day … having basics and staples that you can mix easily with versatility, is fantastic,” she says.

Of course, you can spice up your look with a statement piece, whether that be a jacket or a chunky necklace.

Their regular knee-length trench coats fall at the perfect length for women under 5'5, reaching the ankles.

“I usually say like have one hero statement piece, and you can use another statement accessory if you wish … but they can’t be competing against each other for attention.”

As spring approaches, Eve says some recurring seasonal trends are on the horizon.

These include things like denim, lighter pastel shades and romantic silhouettes.

“The soft pastel shade butter yellow is emerging as a key colour for the season,” Eve says.

“But keep in mind to focus on colour trends that enhance your complexion, rather than wearing it when it doesn’t suit you just because ‘in fashion’.”

She also said trends are moving away from “minimalism” ahead of the spring season.

“More expressive and eclectic styling [is] on the rise, so more colour, print and accessorising.”
