Timpanogos High School to host ‘Prom Closet’, providing free formal wear for students

SALT LAKE CITY – Students at Timpanogos High School announced they are hosting a ‘Prom Closet’ to help students find the perfect formal wear at no cost.

A student-led initiative called Sources of Strength organized the Prom Closet in the high school’s library to ensure that all students, regardless of financial status, could participate in the dance.

High School senior and SOS leader Coco Harward, along with the school’s administration, worked to open the “boutique-style” space where students can check out donated formal dresses, suits and accessories similar to how they would check out a library book.

The library will be outfitted with private dressing rooms, mirrors, and seating for friends who want to shop the Prom Closet together.

“Going dress shopping with friends and getting ready for a school dance is such a core memory for so many of us,” Harward said. “We want every student to have that chance – to feel excited, included and confident. The Prom Closet helps make that possible.”

The Prom Closet will be open to all students in the Alpine School District starting April 21. To shop the Prom Closet, students must bring their student library cards and can borrow outfits for up to a month.

How you can support the ‘Prom Closet’

The SOS asked for donations to ensure the closet is ready for Prom shoppers. Students are looking for gently-used formal wear and accessories to stock the closet. These items can be donated directly to Timpanogos High School.

A *gofundme was created to help the SOS collect funds to make the Prom Closet a lasting, sustainable resource for students now and in the future.

“Prom is a milestone event, and it should be within reach for every student,” Rod Campbell, assistant principal at Timpanogos High School, said. “The Prom Closet ensures that no one has to sit out just because of the cost. It’s inspiring to see students leading the way to build a more inclusive school culture.”
