Donors warmed the hearts of those involved in a recent winter clothing drive.

Organized by the Rotary Satellite Club of Langley Central Sunset, the annual drive was on a cold and rainy evening but that didn’t stop many from stopping by the Langley Senior Resources Society parking lot to drop off donations on the evening of Nov. 25.

“There were 20 garbage bags with the majority of them being large plus a large box of warm clothing,” said Kadonah Davis, the Rotarian in charge.

Davis was impressed by the generosity of the community.

“It was a wet and cold night, but the Langley community was very present. Thank you for your generosity, kindness and commitment!” she said.

One of the largest donations received were seven large garbage bags containing nearly new and new clothing.

“This person came by with literally a truck load of bins with warm clothes, bedding, coats, some new and very expensive looking, to donate,” explained Davis.

The donor attributed his donation to an article his neighbour saw in the Langley Advance Times online article.

“He got there before 5 p.m. We filled seven large garbage bags with his donation alone,” she added.

Langley Vineyard Church has been serving the community for over 30 years through its Free Store, offering clothing and small household essentials at no cost. Every Wednesday morning, volunteers transform into a community service hub, providing portable showers, food and bread distribution, and access to vital supports for those in need.

The church is this year’s recipient of the clothing drive donations. Leith White, an elder with the church, was on hand to receive the donation.

“What an amazing demonstration of the generosity of Langley. Thank you, Langley and Rotary, for this incredible initiative. Again, the timeliness of this was outstanding as it meets the needs of so many – just when they need it. Warm jackets, toques, blankets, clothing – Thank you,” he said.

The Rotary Satellite Club of Langley Central Sunset is an offshoot of the Rotary Club of Langley Central. Members of the satellite club are full members of the main club, however their focus is primarily on service to the community. The club members meet via Zoom the second Tuesday of each month from 6 to 7 p.m. The club’s primary fundraiser is the popular Canadian Flag project that occurs every summer.
