(ABC 6 News) – The Rochester Salvation Army is distributing winter clothes from its coat drive to community members in need.
Those donations were gathered through the Salvation Army’s “More Than A Coat Drive,” in partnership with Rochester Hy-Vee stores. Residents donated coats, hats, gloves, snow pants, boots, and more for those in need of warm clothing this winter.

The Salvation Army will start distributing these items from 3-6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 15th, for families with children. Distribution continues from 8 a.m. to noon on Thursday, October 16th, for adults without children.
Rochester Salvation Army Captain Mike Hanton said new this year, in addition to coats, folks can grab hats, gloves, boots and snow pants, among many other items.
“Those that have these materialistic needs of needing a warm coat, we want to provide more than that. The Salvation Army is about providing hope that extends beyond those things.”
Households who have not yet registered to receive winter outerwear should reach out to the Salvation Army social services office directly at 507-288-3663.
According to the Salvation Army, residents were exceptionally generous with this year’s coat drive. They say nearly 1,000 coats were donated this year, along with 200 pairs of snow pants. The Salvation Army also says they collected more boots than they ever have in one season.

In a statement, Salvation Army Corps Officer Captain Kelly Hanton said “It makes my heart feel so full to know that hundreds of kids are going to get a coat today, and than hundreds of adults are also going to get the outerwear they need to stay warm and safe both today and tomorrow. We’re grateful to everyone who’s participated in this year’s drive.”
