Cochrane Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) has launched a new initiative called “Grad Glow Up” to help high school seniors access formal wear for their big day.
The event, taking place on March 1, is designed to alleviate some of the financial and environmental barriers students may face when preparing for their graduation.
“Grad Glow Up is new this year, and we’re so excited to offer it,” said Kathleen Dennis, a Family Support Worker at FCSS. “It’s a chance for students to come in, register for an appointment, and find formal wear that has been donated by the community over the past six months.”
Donations of dresses, suits, jackets, shirts, and ties have been collected from community members, and FCSS is still seeking additional contributions. “We are always open to more donations,” said Dennis. “We’re especially looking for relatively new items in good condition, ideally from the last five years. We even have a local seamstress lined up to help with any alterations, and Dave’s Dry Cleaning will take care of cleaning the garments.”
Although accessories and shoes are not part of this year’s program, Dennis expressed interest in expanding the initiative in future years.
“For now, we’re focused on providing formal wear, but we’re hoping to grow,” she explained.
The event isn’t just about clothing, it’s about creating an experience for the graduates. Students will have one-hour appointments with a “grad mentor” who will help them select the perfect outfit.
“It’s a big milestone, and we want them to feel special,” said Dennis. “They’ll also receive a swag bag with goodies for their big day.”

The program is open to all high school seniors in Cochrane and residents of West Rocky View County, and registration is available until February 3.
Dennis noted that several students have already signed up but added, “We still have spots available and encourage more grads to take advantage of this opportunity.”
While this is the first year for Grad Glow Up, Dennis and her team hope to assist around 25 to 30 students.
“We’re excited to see the turnout and are grateful for the community support. We hope it becomes an annual event that grows bigger every year.”
Community members interested in donating formal wear or businesses that would like to contribute to the event can drop off items at FCSS, The Clothesline, or Helping Hands of Cochrane and Area.
