In my book, fall is unequivocally the best season for fashion. The not-too-hot, not-too-cold weather makes for the ultimate layering circumstances, and nothing feels quite as good as slipping on a pair of boots after a long, long season of wearing sandals and slides.
I’ve been curating my fall wardrobe since the middle of summer, and keeping an eye on the biggest trends of the new season. If you’re the kind of guy who finds himself in a post-summer haze, not sure how to dress when you have to style more than a tank top and shorts, you’ve come to the right place—everything you need to know about dressing for the season is right here. From colorful accessories and funky textures to plenty of pockets and slim silhouettes, this is how we’re dressing for fall 2024.
Second Skin Leather Jacket
There’s a very high chance you already have a leather jacket in your closet, and that’s great. It’s a wardrobe staple, a cool-guy garment, and this fall, it’s an absolute must. More specifically, a slim-fitting leather jacket is a must. Think of the sharp silhouettes of Hedi Slimane’s Celine Homme, or look above at this custom-made jacket from New York-based designer Jagger Harvey. It’s the second-skin look that leather jackets have on cool guys who own motorcycles. Big, baggy, and boxy is out—this year, it’s all about keeping things tight.
Standout Accessories
Get a little bit playful with it. Go chunky, funky, bold, and colorful with your accessories this season—especially when the rest of your fit is simple. A white tee and jeans are made all the better with something as simple as a cool baseball hat, like the one above from Rowing Blazers and ’47. It makes your fit more dynamic and interesting. And if you aren’t on the jewelry train already, it’s well past time to reach for something colorful. Gold and silver chains and rings are cool, but nothing beats the elegant, elevated look of colored gems, whether they be earrings, a ring, a necklace, or, hell, even a brooch. The styles above are from New York-based JJR Jewelry, but if you’re looking for something more in-reach to pair with everything from suits to sweats, you’ve got options below.
Textures You Wanna Touch
Corduroy jackets, suede pants, mohair cardigans—this season, it’s all about fun, fuzzy, freaky textures. Amp your look with a hairy jacket, or swap your cotton pleated pants for cords. Textures give your look more dimension, even in just one piece.
Slim Tailoring
Fashion is sort of like a pendulum; when it swings to one extreme, eventually, it’ll inevitably swing back toward the other. In the past, boxy and oversized silhouettes have been trendy. Now, we’re back to slim-fitting basics—a sharp blazer, a sleek overcoat, a tailored button-down. Don’t be afraid to reach for interesting pieces, like Zegna’s Il Conte jacket—just keep the silhouette in mind.
Westernwear Revival
The Texan in me couldn’t be happier that we’re incorporating cowboy-core style into the mainstream for fall. Clean the scuffs off your cowboy boots, pull out your bootcut jeans, pair that denim shirt with your denim pants, and don’t shy away from fringe, baby!
Big Fuckin’ Stompy Boots
If you’re looking for a sign to break in a pair of Doc Martens this fall, this is it. Chunky boots are what it’s all about—your slim summer sneakers won’t cut it this season, especially when faced with the platform soles and stompy styles we’re loving. It might sound daunting right now, but you’ll thank me when you don’t even notice yourself stepping in a big ass puddle.
Grandpacore
Fall is about cozy vibes—pumpkin spice lattes, a chill in the air, and clothes your grandfather would most certainly wear. Embrace it! Reach for a cable-knit sweater or a thick shawl-collar cardigan. Wrap yourself up in ’em and bask in it. Tweed and elbow patches are definitely bonuses, too. If it looks like something a tenured history professor at a small liberal arts college in New England would wear, it’s perfect.
Utility Pockets
Functional fashion is in this fall—you can never have too many pockets. From pants to shackets to vests to coats, anything with a few extra pockets than it probably needs to have will serve you well, in terms of looks and performance.
