Milwaukee’s Community Thanksgiving Day Feast

Community volunteers, nonprofits and elected officials teamed up to serve a warm meal and warm clothes to hundreds of families on Milwaukee’s northside.The 6th Annual Breaking Bread Community Thanksgiving Feast is hosted by Dream Team United WI and Embassy Center MKE.Dozens of volunteers gave up their holiday to give back to hundreds of people.Michelle Bates said she came out with her grandkids “to celebrate Thanksgiving.”The menu of hot food included all of the Thanksgiving classics..two different types of turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, corn and more.Those who came out didn’t just leave with a Thanksgiving meal; they were also able to stuff boxes full of groceries to take home.”To stand in line in November, close to December, you’ve got to be hungry. You gotta want something to eat. So, I feel good we’re able to do this,” said Milwaukee Alderman Russell Stamper, who helped host the event.County Supervisor Sequanna Taylor explains how the event has grown.”A couple of years ago, we noticed people would come without gloves or hats, so we decided to add on the coats and winter wear to it,” she said.Those coats, hats and gloves, are all brand new and free of charge to everyone.”People come from every zip code; this just isn’t Milwaukee. I’ve had people from Cudahy, Bayside, Greenfield because we don’t turn anyone away,” she added.And with her grandchildren fed and clothed this holiday, Bates is counting her blessings.”I appreciate that they’re out here helping us.
